Review of Skyrim
The history of The Elder Scrolls series goes back more than seventeen years. Even by human standards this is quite a long time. It’s surprising that during this time nothing so familiar and unpleasant for the rest of the gaming industry happened to the series – a change of developers, bankruptcy of the studio, complete failure of the next part. Bethesda Softworks carefully preserves the Elder Scrolls, carefully recording more and more exciting adventures on them.
However, despite all the advantages of this universe, each individual representative of the series received his share of reproaches of varying degrees of severity. Especially fresh are the memories of the previous project – Oblivion, which, long before its release, carried a heavy burden of generously scattered promises and the stamp of inevitable “revolutionism”. So it’s easy to see why fans were wary when Bethesda started listing all the things it was planning to do in Skyrim. However, after sixty hours of immersion in the game, your humble servant can report: everything turned out exactly as promised. The fifth part of the famous role-playing series is not only a real contender for the title of “Game of the Year”, but also one of the best RPGs in many, many years.Through many years of selection, Bethesda managed to create such a system of variables (races, game classes, plot branches, gear and tasks) that anyone can easily fit into it and find something to their liking. Mages, warriors, thieves, slackers of unknown specialty – everyone in Skyrim has their own story, their own path and their own forks. Game events quickly cease to be divided into “plot” and “additional”; almost every corner of the game, every task, every dungeon is interesting in its own way. Only here, having entered the city at midnight after a half-hour journey on foot (which, by the way, will not seem boring for a minute), the first thing you want to do is not rush further along the storyline, but turn into a tavern, rent a room and listen to the local bard singing something about the exploits of Ragnar the Red with the grace of Phoebe Buffay from the series “Friends”. And when leaving the city, visit this tavern again to take another look at the girl with whom you unexpectedly had so much in common.
And in just fifteen minutes, an unprecedentedly beautiful scene of a fight with a dragon who has flown to burn that very city can unfold – a gigantic creature, full of power and dignity, soars over the houses, sometimes hovering near the ground, sometimes soaring high into the sky, and sometimes, blocking out the sunlight, it whistles over the top of the head, forcing you to press your head into your shoulders in fear.
At the same time, friends happily share screenshots of themselves almost hugging bears; someone is interested in collecting rare mushrooms. Bethesda once again managed to do a very rare thing – to show that even epic heroes have hobbies, leisure time and, in general, their own affairs, no less important and interesting than saving the world and other exploits. In Skyrim, you can buy a house, get married, make a career in the thieves’ underground, collect a huge collection of books, be forcibly turned into a vampire and spend several days searching for a cure. Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a game of thousands of possibilities, does not provide even a hundredth of everything that Skyrim has.
This game has a quality that https://conquer-casino.uk/ is quite rare for computer games – you don’t just want to live here, you can live here. Once upon a time, developers estimated the “duration” of their game at 300 hours – and this, in our opinion, is a very realistic figure. Just show respect to the game, start admiring every moment of it, every, even the most insignificant, event – and it will reward you generously.
In a telephone discussion of Skyrim, Ilya Ovcharenko, puffing with delight, could not find the right word for a long time: “This game feels so… you know… volume!». It’s hard to say more accurately: Skyrim is a huge world in which there are thousands of activities and paths, among which (most importantly!) there is not a single thing superfluous, boring or unnecessary. And here we have two options: either the entire specialized press somehow suddenly grew old and began to whine about “the old days” and “they don’t make games like this anymore,” or we have before us a truly exceptional project, one in a million. It’s your choice, but the second option is somehow more pleasant for us.
Snow lies in continuous layers all over the world. In the southern regions it is not yet so ubiquitous. But closer to the top of the map everything is covered with a dense white veil. And snowstorms! How beautiful the snow is swirling here! Games in The Elder Scrolls series have always touched the soul with their unique beauty, but in Skyrim everything is elevated to a new level. It’s even more pleasant to realize that behind the external beauty lies the true depth and elaboration of the world, which was so lacking in the long-suffering Oblivion.
At first, it may seem that the engine of the new part of The Elder Scrolls is the same as the last time. Produces animation of the main character and textures. But in reality the technology is already new. Creation Engine – Bethesda development. Created specifically for Skyrim. We suspect that by “new” the developers meant “well-modified old one”. The lighting has been greatly improved, and the palette no longer hurts the eyes with its unnatural colors. During the passage you will never have the feeling that the artists have faked something somewhere.
If you want to use Skyrim not only as a universal means for long meditation with soothing music, then you won’t be disappointed either. Although, as we mentioned just above, you shouldn’t expect any special revelations in terms of the overall gameplay setup.
The atmosphere in the game would not be so tangible without the excellent soundtrack. The wind howls very realistically on the mountain peaks, skeletons trample through the dark catacombs, and light and unobtrusive music in the open air gives way to intense melodies underground. And the domestic voice acting didn’t disappoint this time. At the end of the day we got some great acting. The voices of dragons, elders, bandits and soldiers came out exactly as they were imagined.
The only thing I can complain about is the graphics. Or rather, slightly outdated water and character models, which seem to have remained at the level of the same Oblivion. But these shortcomings are offset by the gorgeous landscapes that appear before our eyes every now and then. All these houses, lawns, waterfalls, caves, Dweremer ruins and cozy streets make you quickly forget about the few shortcomings. I would also like to say something about the weather effects. Everything, from light fog to a snowstorm, was done with a solid A. Technical problems with the game sometimes occur, but as an exception rather than a rule. The main problem can be called texture drops on the Xbox 360 when installing the game on the hard drive, but these problems are temporary and quickly fixable. I was pleased with the product’s performance when running in Nvidia 3D Vision mode. On the GTX 570 video card at maximum settings, the game produced as much as 50 frames per second.
So, above we figured out why Skyrim can safely be called a reference RPG. We must admit, we thought they didn’t do this anymore. There is nothing to surprise a sophisticated player today. That a role-playing game is not capable of drawing you in with such force and not letting go for so long. But, as it turned out, we were wrong. Before us is a masterpiece. Reference. Piece product. It is strictly not recommended to skip.
